There has been no shortage of rumors regarding a re-release of the Star Wars films in 3D.  The success of Avatar has only added fuel to the fire.  While Lucasfilm has made no official announcement, it doesn’t seem too far of a stretch that Star Wars 3D will one day hit theatres, given George Lucas’ penchant for new movie-making technology and the fact that fans are salivating over the idea.  A recent article featured in The Sunday Times is just another example of unconfirmed references to Star Wars 3D.

While we wait and pray for the official word from the Maker himself, here are the top 6 Star Wars scenes that were made for 3D:

  1. The Pod Race – The pod race scene from Episode I: The Phantom Menace lends itself perfectly for 3D.  Looming canyons, rock obstacles, exploding engines.  The scene was memorable and thrilling in 2D and 3D will give audiences the chance to sit right in Anakin’s pilot seat.
  2. Asteroid FieldsStar Wars has two iconic asteroid field scenes and both would be awesome in 3D:  Obi-Wan’s chase with Jango Fett in Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Vader’s pursuit of the Millennium Falcon in The Empire Strikes Back.  With spinning space debris, laser bolts, space slugs and crazy concussion grenades, these scenes will have audiences ducking for cover!
  3. The Battle of CoruscantEpisode III: Revenge of the Sith starts off with a bang.  The Battle of Coruscant is the biggest space battle in the entire Star Wars saga and seeing that ARC fighter eject its pilots in a firey ball of destruction in 3D would just be too cool for school.
  4. Death Star Destruction (Part I & II) – The end of A New Hope and Return of the Jedi both feature exploding Death Stars…who doesn’t want to see bits of twisted battle station flying at their face?
  5. Speeder Bike Chase – The pod race of the Original Trilogy, the speeder bike chase in Return of the Jedi could only get more intense with 3D.  Trees whizzing by, ducking under fallen branches…everyone wishes they could own a speeder bike…seeing this scene in 3D will be the next best thing.
  6. The Opening Scene – When people say “The Opening Scene” in reference to Star Wars, you know what they mean.  The fading yellow letters, John Williams’ legendary score…and the massive Star Destroyer sliding over the top of the screen.  Seeing that in 3D just might bring a tear to your eye.

While we wait and see if 3D is, in fact, on the horizon, Star Wars is giving us plenty to look forward to.  With The Clone Wars in full swing, new video games, books and comics planned, and a live action television show in the works, Star Wars lives on…let’s just hope it eventually decides to take a trip into the third dimension!

What do you think?  What are some Star Wars scenes you think would be awesome in 3D?  Share your thought in the comments!

Did you see the interview with Lucas on the Daily Show? No mention of Star Wars in 3D (sadly) but still funny:
